Nova Scotia Tax Brackets 2026

On a $65,000 salary, Nova Scotia's income tax comes to $6,348 and Ottawa's to $6,307. Outside Quebec, no other province takes more than the federal government at that income. The reasons are an $11,932 basic personal amount, the smallest in Canada, and a second bracket that starts at $30,995. Both 2026 schedules follow, with the combined rate on every band.

Five rates in each schedule

Both taxes apply to the same taxable income, one band at a time.

Nova Scotia began indexing its brackets, its basic personal amount and four other credits with the 2025 tax year, and indexed them again this January. Its 14.95% rate now starts at $30,995, about half the point where Ottawa's second rate begins, and its 21% top rate from $157,124 makes a combined 54.00% on the highest incomes.

The smallest reduction, and it isn't indexed

Nova Scotia's low-income tax reduction is $300 for a single person aged 19 or older, reduced by 5% of net income over $15,000, so it is gone at $21,000. Those amounts are written into the Income Tax Act, and they are not on the list that indexation covers, so while the brackets rise each year the reduction stays where it is.

Together with the basic personal amount, it means no Nova Scotia tax until taxable income passes $15,219, still below the $16,452 at which federal tax begins. For a little over a thousand dollars of income, Nova Scotia is the only government taxing it. The reduction rises to $600 for a couple and adds $165 for each dependent child; the calculators here give only the single-filer amount.

Rates on the next dollar

calc-hq's tax engine produced this table by working out the tax on income and on that income plus a dollar, from zero to well past the top bracket, so the reduction's withdrawal and the federal taper both appear. It assumes income with no CPP or EI taken off, as with a pension or investment income, and counts only federal and Nova Scotia income tax.

Wages are taxed a little more lightly than the table in the rows below $85,000: CPP and EI premiums earn their own credits, and the enhanced part of CPP is deductible. A $65,000 salary pays 35.30% on its next dollar, where the table shows 37.17%. Higher up, the two match, with each threshold $1,127 further up in gross pay.

A $65,000 salary in Halifax

The engine's $12,655 of income tax on $65,000 is 19.5% of the salary, before CPP and EI. The top dollars of that salary fall in Nova Scotia's 16.67% band, which begins at $61,991, and Ottawa's 20.5% band.
